Headache and Migraine: What’s the Good News?
I’ve been an advocate, researcher, and writer for those of us with headache and migraine for 10 years. Here is some of the GOOD news – things that I think have improved over the past decade…
- Better awareness: There’s still a lot of misinformation, but good info seems more available.
- Better medications prescribed: I’ve heard from many people who have found help from a more “targeted” medication.
- More treatments available: That includes supplements, information on diet and lifestyle, and other treatments.
- Doctors/specialists more open to treatments: There is much more awareness in the medical community that “complimentary” and “whole-person” treatments work.
- More support: Partly because of #1, there does seem to be better support available for at least some patients.
One thing I didn’t mention is that we simply know far more about headache disorders than we did 10 years ago. However, I focused more on the results of that.
Now I know, many of you reading this post are going to be tempted to say – I certainly haven’t experienced improvement! Or My doctor isn’t open to complimentary treatments! Or Nothing works for me!
There’s plenty of time to talk about that. Let’s just remember that, in the big picture, many many people have experienced a lot of improvement in their everyday life. There’s a time to cry against injustice and push for improvement – and there’s a time to be thankful. We’ve come a long way.

The only thing that really helped me was my own research online. I’m pretty sure that if I hadn’t stopped going to my doctor I’d be suicidal, it’s just one drug after the next with doctors. The thing that made the main trigger to my illness very clear was botox – available on the UK NHS but they don’t like to give it – as a diagnostic it is very good indeed. After that it was clear that I had to keep my face muscles – above my eyes – relaxed.
