James – I keep wondering if anyone has studied or will study a link between the stress hormones – cortisol and epinephrine, and Migraine triggers. I’d be curious as to whether stress isn’t a trigger not psychologically, per se, but physiologically in the form of stress hormones. After all, Migraineurs are vulnerable to other sorts of hormonal changes! This might explain the “stress let-down” Migraine that so many Migraineurs report – the sudden Migraine when the stressful or exciting event is over.

Good question, Megan – we’ll have to look into that. It seems that many drastic changes in our bodies (or not so drastic!) can trigger migraine. If you’re right, it wouldn’t make stress a direct trigger, but just another thing triggering those changes which in turn can trigger migraine.

“Stress letdown” is probably a combination of a lot of things – there are usually changes in schedule involved, diet, activity, etc.

    Good observation. 🙂

My GP has always tried to pin stress and depression as triggers for my continual cluster migraine attack currently in month 15 with no let up. In 3 of those months I had a stammer come and go which they said was caused by stress. I have been to see counsellors with no reported issues. Logged my day to day feelings and stress and anxiety levels etc. No obvious signs of regular or excessive stress. Also my depression worsened with the continual pain and previous increased pain from migraines in the previous 3 years. There doesn’t seem to be ANY obvious triggers and as yet no treatment.
