Great article James! Sunglasses are extremely important for me as I tend to be photophobic to some degree all the time because of chronic daily headaches. I have been using optical grade sunglasses for the last 7 years or so. They last longer than the cheap ones you can buy off the rack for $10 and they provide me with greater protection. I actually have two pairs of sunglasses that I use on different days. For me I have found that gray tinted sunglasses are best on bright, sunny days while brown tinted lenses are best on overcast days. Both pairs are polarized to cut the glare. I never go anywhere without my sunglasses.

My eye doctor suggested I put a rose tint on my regular glasses I wear all the time. He said it alleviates the flickering of the overhead flourescent lights in my office that cannot be seen by the eye but is registered by the brain. He said that such lights can cause a lot of eye strain. So I thought I would give it a try. The tint is so light you can only tell it is there by putting the glasses on a pice of white paper. It has really helped reduce the glare in my office and the resuling eye strain. Also, when I do have a headache, the lights are not so bad.

I’ve worn sunglasses for year to protect my eyes from glare which is a major trigger for my migaines. I focus on wearing sunglasses with a high “infrared light protection” rate as well (70%+). I was given this advice from a Chemist years ago and it has worked for me. A lot of sunglasses, even expensive ones, do not have infrared light protection.

I tried the coating that darkens when you go outside and they did not darken NEARLY enough despite the optician’s implying they’d be equivalent to sunglasses. I had to take them back. It was excruciating trying to wear those things outdoors. I’d caution anyone with migraines NOT to get those.

I disagree. First of all you can get the photochromic lenses that get very dark outside. I have been buying them for years, and you have a choice in outside darkness. I have tried the semi dark and the very dark.

Secondly I suffer from debilitating migraines, and they are life savers for me.

Everyone is different when it comes to migraines. Unfortunately not one method works for everyone.

Precision tinted glasses have been shown to be highly effective at reducing migraine attack frequency and severity, but very few people have access to an eye-care professional with the advanced equipment necessary to customize tint to each individual patient. FL-41 rose-tinted glasses have also proven to be quite effective at doing the same job, but can be widely produced and distributed. Actually, a new, clear coating that more effectively blocks the light that can trigger and exacerbate migraines is undergoing clinical trials right now. Hate to break it to you all but polarized lenses are NOT any better at cutting glare than the regular sunglasses. I’ve compared my cheapo $12 unpolarized sunglasses to expensive polarized ones and found NO DIFFERENCE. I had other people try them on and compare (while passengers in a moving vehice — to compare glare from sunlight and off of other cars, etc.) and everyone agreed there was no difference between the polarized and unpolarized sunglasses. IMO it’s a complete myth. (we did verify that my sunglasses were infact unpolarized and the other ones were indeed polarized–so there is no mistaking it)

Hi Jennifer – thanks for your comments!

I’m not sure what brands you tried, but I’ve tried polarized and unpolarized and I’ve found a significant difference. For me, the polarized sunglasses are so much better that I would never want to go back!

But there may be quite a difference between brands. I ordered mine from Smith Optics, and really like them.

I can’t wear sunglasses because it makes me feel dizzy or because I am just not use to wearing them .the ends of rims of glass feel heavy . Sorry if this doesn’t make sense to you.

My wife gets severe headaches and has been using sunglasses from a company called MigraShades, migrashades.com. The lenses are specially made for people who suffer from headaches, dark and geared for indoor as well as outdoor use. She has used them every day for the past three years and they really help to screen out unnecessary light. I would recommend them highly.

I know everyone is different and has different types of migraines, but I’ve had luck with sunglasses from migrashades.com. I have three pair — and they’re all dark enough to help me even on the sunniest of days. The frames are large enough to block out sunlight from the sides, too … but they’re also attractive. (Not that I care when I have a headache! I’d wear anything!) Hope they help you, too.

I am a firm believer in quality sunglasses that block the UV light. They definitely help me when I have headaches. Indoor fluorescent lighting bothers me so my prescription progressive lenses have have the anti-glare coating and I find it helps indoors as well as outdoors. They are also photo-chromatic and get darker in sunlight. I have heard, some photo-chromatic don’t turn as dark inside a car because of the coatings on car windows, mine will get darker when I get out of a car so I guess that is true. For me, except on the brightest days or when I already have a migraine well in progress the photo-chromatic are good enough that I don’t have to get out my regular sunglasses. Fortunately my prescription is for reading not for distance/driving.
As for me polarized sunglasses give me headaches almost immediately. I never buy polarized. I don’t like buying on line because fit is very important to me and sometimes the stores that carry quality glasses lean more toward polarized and have fewer options for the UV protection with non-polarized.

UV and antiglare is good, polarization is good, but if u are still having issues u should try FL-41 tinted lens which is specially for fluorescent lights and sensitivity, I tried somnilight and theraspex and axon Optics and migrelents and none of them were as good as Axon Optics for me. They let u send your own frame to them so it will fit after you try their lens first i dont know if they can make your prescription but i know they can do some rx ‘s Peace xoxo Mike D

I agree with Sam. And now, 5 years later from his post…they have ACTUALLY successfully made the FL41 tinted glasses and they are working…working really well. These doctors have produced something amazing that I think will make a big difference in a lot of people’s lives that are trying to fight migraines. You can read about the success here: https://www.axonoptics.com/fl-41-glasses/

Great article, though I would add one more study, in which red tinted contact lenses (used because they offered complete coverage) were used to treat ongoing migraines.

According to the study, the red lenses “brought immediate pain relief to 31 of the [33] patients…. of the 26 patients reporting total relief of all migraine pain, 5 reported complete relief within 10 seconds of the insertion of the second lens. For most patients, pain relief began within 5 minutes, and approximately 50% relief was obtained within 20 minutes.”

This seems to be added evidence that red lenses are the most effective for the treatment of migraines.

I’ve had a lot of success with rosy-colored Fl-41 glasses like Theraspecs:
    https://www.theraspecs.com/profile-theraspecs-indoor/

and also with darker red migraine glasses for outside use:

Have you heard of any particular success with green glasses like Migralens?

I’ve tried the FL-41 glasses from Theraspecs, Somnilight, and Axon Optics. Axon Optics was made by the original researcher of the lens and they use a upgraded tint now. Theraspecs is a generic version by a migraine blogger, and Somnilight is a supercheap new competitor. Of the three I found the most relief with the Axon Optics. Theraspecs and Somnilight were about the same for me, so of those two I’d rather pay way less for Somnilight, but to be honest they didn’t do much more than my regular polarized Oakleys and the color was too ugly and distracting that it gave me wrose mgirnes…the Axon Optics one was great tho once I sent them my own frame and returned there frame back to them since it wasnt right for my face
