It is SO ironic this story pops up (for me) today! I think all us migrainuers know that stress, at least in the form of physical tension, exacerbates head pain. I, also, believe that one feeds the other. For about 6 months now, my headaches have increased greatly. Stress at work had really kicked up. I keep a migraine diary and rate my pain 1-5, with 5 being the worst. In the last month, they had become almost daily; most days are 3s and 4s. Went to my primary, he put me on muscle relaxers. I really think I needed something stronger as they were hardly effective.
Recently, I started therapy for depression. Yesterday, in conversation regarding my headaches and high tension level, she said I needed to learn how to release the tension. After having a “good” session (though having a raging #5), I felt my shoulders drop down. I took a muscle relaxer on the way home, and it worked! Laid down when I got home and slept about 12 hours. Feeling somewhat refreshed this morning, I think I needed the restful “rest”!!

“The results add weight to the concept that stress can be a factor contributing to the onset of headache disorders, that it accelerates the progression to chronic headache, exacerbates headache episodes, and that the headache experience itself can serve as a stressor…”

This is probably the most salient comment I have ever read about headache pain. What is even more frustrating (and stress inducing) for the few of us who have rare forms of chronic headache (PH in my case) is that the medical industry (and everyone who has ever read anything about headaches but never experienced one) thinks every headache is a “migraine”. No, its not its not a migraine (its taken a lifetime to get that diagnosed), and I don’t have to stop eating chocolate because you diagnosed it as a migraine…
