1% Thursday: Help Someone Unexpectedly
This week – find a simple but (if possible) creative way to help someone.
We all know it, but we need to be reminded to do it. Helping someone else really is therapeutic. It is perhaps one of the best things you can do – especially when you’re starting to get trapped in your own (very real) problems, and feeling like you’re of no use to anyone.
Well, you can help someone, even though it may not be something big. The rules are:
- Do something you wouldn’t otherwise have done
- Try to be a little bit (or very) creative
- Do it this week
It can be something big or small, you decide. You can do something for someone with chronic illness, or someone who normally helps you, or someone who isn’t expecting you to do anything. You can do it with their knowledge, or anonymously.
What could you do? Something that takes some work maybe, like baking some cookies, sending a care package, doing some cleaning for someone, or writing a poem for somebody. Give an unexpected back rub, make a photo collage, write someone a song, or have someone over for dinner or a games night.
Sound overwhelming? Here are some easier ideas. Send someone a gift certificate. Say something sincerely encouraging. Pray for someone. And remember, you can find a cohort to do something with you if you want – though you might find it fun to do it alone this time.
Don’t get me wrong – you don’t have to do something to be of value. Even when you can do nothing, the community benefits by helping you – you better believe it. However, it’s so good for you to help someone else, especially something random and unexpected, that it’s worth it to be reminded once in a while.
It’s good for you, and gives quite a lift to someone else. Go ahead – make your secret plan, and put it into action!
PS Looking to do this on a regular basis? This little, inexpensive paperback will give you lots of great ideas to keep you going for a long time!
What is 1% Thursday?
Every Thursday at Headache and Migraine News (weather permitting) we’ll talk about one measurable, practical thing we can do to make our lives just 1% better. Usually it will be something very easy, sometimes it will be a challenge. Let us know if you try it, or share an idea of your own – and maybe a year from now we’ll see that things have really changed for the better!
