Depakote for Migraine Prevention

Depakote, known as valproate semisodium or divalproex sodium, is also sold under brand names such as Epival and Valance.  Generic versions are available.

Dosage?  Patients typically start with a dose of 250mg twice daily.  The dosage is then raised as needed.  It is essential to be monitored by a doctor when on this medication.

Side Effects?  Possible side effects include hair loss, nausea, and weight gain.
