Welcome to College/University Gifts
So your favourite student is heading to a new year at college or university. This person is intelligent, kind, and already a success. But they also struggle with migraine. How about giving them a thoughtful gift to start off the year?
Gifts for people with migraine can be tricky. Maybe you have a favourite migraine book you’d like to share, for example – but it takes a special relationship and good timing, otherwise it will be another preachy “just-do-this-and-you’ll-be-cured” thing.
If you’re in the United States, you can promote migraine advocacy and give a gift at the same time, through the National Headache Foundation. The NHF will send a Migraine University Survival Toolkit to your favourite student, which includes “a zippered canvas bag that includes an eye mask, hot/cold pack, pill holder, emergency card and door sign indicating ‘do not disturb – having a headache'” (not everyone will appreciate that last one, but hey).
To have the kit sent, just make a $20 donation and select “Migraine U Toolkit” under campaign. For more information, check here: Migraine University
Maybe you’re not in the US, or you’re not thrilled with the toolkit, and you’d like to send something on your own. Well, think about some simple things that can be a big help to students. For example:
- An Eye Pillow / Sleep Mask – there’s a reason why it’s in the NHF toolkit. Sleep is one of the most important things to be improved for a migraine patient. Many migraineurs recommend the Sleep Master, but we’ve talked about other eye pillows in the past.
- Ear Plugs – speaking of sleep, I love these ear plugs.
- Promote Hydration – Remembering to drink water is an important key to improving your health. If they’re into such things, consider paying for a premium version of the app Waterlogged (iOs), or a similar water drinking app. Or – a nice water bottle? A lot of people love the bubba straw series. There are also bottles with filters, like these premium brita bottles. And personally, I love my Klean Kanteen.
- Snacks – the temptation is great to load up on too much caffeine and sugar. Why not send along some high protein snacks to help with those long nights of studying? This will vary depending on the student and their lifestyle, but go for something high protein, no sugar or sweeteners, and low in grains/flours. You might want to consider a gift basket – make your own! Or a gift card to a restaurant that has healthy foods.
- A little encouragement – Hey, it can be as simple as mailing a card (what – mailing? Yes, I’m serious. Be different. Being different is what catches people’s attention and makes them realize you put in a little extra effort.), or sending a text, or whatever it may be. Invite them out for coffee/tea. Have a chat. Whatever you think would encourage your favourite student in their first month.
Don’t just think about it – do something now! And let’s see some great students (who happen to have migraine) find success in spite of the obstacles in their way.
By the way, if someone is new to migraine, have them check out A Message to Youth with Migraine.
